SUMMARY:The Debashish Bhattacharya Trio in Topanga Canyon
DESCRIPTION:The Debashish Bhattacharya Trio presents their 2024 Legacy Tour: Pure classical Indian repertoire\n\n\nThe Debashish Bhattacharya Trio in Topanga Canyon! Join us for a mesmerizing evening of pure Indian classical music at Corazón Performing Arts. Don’t miss out on this unforgettable live performance in an intimate eclectic space! \n \nThe Debashish Bhattacharya Trio \npresents \nLegacy: The music of pioneering Indian recording artists \nThe Trio \nPandit Debashish Bhattacharya is an award-winning artist known worldwide as the unrivaled master of Hindustani slide guitar. A product of the demanding tradition of the ancient guru-student training system\, he has received numerous international awards and accolades\, including two Grammy nominations\, Billboard Top 10\, and the BBC Planet Award. \nRounding out the Trio are Debashish’s daughter Anandi\, a gifted vocalist and a rising star in her own right\, and Debashish’s younger brother Subhasis\, who is recognized as one of the greatest percussionists of his generation. \nThe Legacy \n The concert program for the Fall of 2024 consists of a unique tribute to the pioneering Indian recording artists of the early 1900s. In those days\, small shellac disks captured succinct renditions of Hindustani classical ragas and popular songs\, creating a sensation among the wider populace. Indeed\, this golden era saw the rise of the first celebrity musicians; household names of the time. \nAs a direct descendant of this illustrious past\, both spiritually and in terms of training\, Pandit Debashish Bhattacharya has created a program that links this legacy to the present and forges a path to the future with new compositions. \nThe Performance \n The Ensemble will recreate the spirit and character of those early recordings. Dressed in the fashion of the period\, they will transport us to those early days\, when a family might have huddled around a radio to hear their favorite stars in\, say\, 1915. \nPandit Debashish Bhattacharya has not only been recognized as the globe’s finest slide guitarist\, he is also an innovator and inventor. Indeed\, a major highlight of the performance will be the ornate stringed instruments of Debashish’s own creation\, each of which are manufactured and sold by his company Trideb International Guitars. These include the Chaturangui (Chatur = 4\, ang = color\,“gui” from guitar)\, a 26-string slide guitar; Pushpa Veena (Pushpa = “flower” Veena = “stringed instrument”)\, a 25-string hybrid of the Rabab sarod and slide guitar\, and more. \nWith lilting\, elegant vocal lines\, labrynthine slide guitar\, driving complex rhythms of tabla\, and the luminous sparkle of the Swarmandal\, the evening will feature various combinations of members and instruments: the full ensemble\, duets\, and solo pieces. On full display in each work will be the combination of virtuosity\, finely filigreed ornamentation\, and emotional expression that makes Hindustani music so appealing.

SUMMARY:Seffarine: Music of Morocco\, Spain and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Saffarine merges continents with Spanish flamenco\, Arabic and Andalusian music\, Persian classical\, & jazz in eclectic Topanga Canyon space\n\n\nJoin Seffarine on Friday August 23rd at Corazón Performing Arts for an unforgettable evening of music that will transport your thirsty spirit. The sounds that stir the dry winds of Southern Spain and Morocco\, two countries separated by only a whisper of the Mediterranean\, are the musical DNA of the beautifully complex music of Seffarine. Seffarine’s unique blend of traditional Moroccan music with jazz\, flamenco\, and classical influences will leave you mesmerized. Don’t miss out on this cultural experience that will take your senses on a journey of musical traditions. Get ready to be swept away by the enchanting melodies and rhythms of Seffarine! \n  \nABOUT SEFFARINE \nThe musicians of Seffarine\, soulful singer Lamiae Naki who sings in Arabic\, Farsi\, Spanish and French and musician Nat Hulskamp who plays the flamenco guitar and oud\, are joined by bassist Damian Erskine and flamenco dancer\, singer and cajon player Manuel Gutierrez wows with explosive flamenco dance footwork. The result is a lively and enriching musical journey throughout the Mediterranean and Middle East. \nThe evening’s ensemble explores the musical traditions of both sides of the Strait of Gibraltar with a culturally rooted yet thoroughly contemporary nod to the long period between the 9th and 15th centuries when Muslim\, Jewish\, and Christian cultures lived side by side and largely peacefully on the Iberian Peninsula\, influencing one another’s cultures\, including musically. \n“Although we all have training in the traditional musical cultures represented in the group — Spanish flamenco\, Persian classical\, North African and Arab Andalusian — our music is a contemporary reflection of the centuries of exchange that happened at the mouth of the Mediterranean\,” Hulskamp says. “Morocco and Spain — Africa and Europe — are only separated by a few miles at the Straits of Gibraltar\, and of course this made Morocco a crossroad of Arabic\, Iberian\, Amazigh\, Sephardic and West African music. Although Lamiae and I write the music\, everyone in the group has learned a lot about each other’s traditions\, which while giving color and texture to the music\, also gives our originals a unified sound\, rather than a patchwork.” \nNaki was born in the old Moroccan city of Fez\, where she began singing at an early age\, learning Moroccan and flamenco music and eventually also studying classical Turkish singing in Istanbul. Hulskamp was born in Portland\, where he began studying with acoustic guitar master Paul Chasman as a teenager. He soon began to study flamenco guitar as well\, and then\, in Morocco\, the oud. \nRhythms are an integral part of the ensemble’s music-making: The name Seffarine comes from “the ancient metalworking square in Fez\, which is famous for the complex rhythms that ring out from the blacksmiths’ hammers.” \nABOUT THE EVENING: \nDoors Open 8:15. Concert begins 8:30 with two sets of music. Enjoy intermission as the crickets and frogs serenade in the Corazon Secret Garden. DESCRIPTION:Collecting vinyl from around the world for over 30 years\, Jeremy Sole’s DJ sets and remixes juxtapose global sounds into a sonic ritual\n\n\nJeremy Sole plays SAT AUGUST 10th 10PM Topanga Canyon…perhaps one of the most unique\, wild and untamed areas in Los Angeles. For Real. Come enjoy the night!! \n9PM opening set by singer/songwriter Dylan Bailey. \n\n$30 bucks or 2 for $40.\nCorazon monthly members 50% discount (at door). Collecting vinyl from around the world for over 30 years\, his DJ sets and remixes juxtapose global sounds into a sonic ritual for the “genre non-conforming”\, blending or downright transcending era\, style and tempo. \nSole has had the honor of sharing the stage and/or recording in the studio with hundreds of his inspirations over his career including Stevie Wonder\, Roy Ayers\, Parliament Funkadelic\, Chaka Khan\, Moses Sumney\, James Blake and many more. Gilles Peterson named Sole “#2 DJ Of The Year\, 2011” as well as “Radio Show Of The Year\, 2014”. \nSole was the last DJ to open for both Ray Charles and Gil Scott-Heron on what turned out to be their final concerts. He deejayed for Sly Stone’s birthday party\, worked on music for a year with Ms. Lauryn Hill and enlisted the same Daptone musicians as Amy Winehouse to produce a live\, all-analog reimagining of the 1976 classic “Golden Years” for David Bowie in his final days. He was asked to spin traditional New Orleans funeral dirges atop a giant animatronic octopus with Susan Sarandon\, leading a procession of hundreds through Burning Man to bring Timothy Leary’s ashes to the temple. It’s been a wild and freaky ride. \nSole is most widely known for his weekly KCRW radio show\, now approaching its 17th year\, where he helped break many now-major artists with their first radio plays including Black Pumas\, Hiatus Kaiyote\, Michael Kiwanuka\, The Shakes (now Alabama Shakes). He aired the world radio debuts of music for Santana\, Chicano Batman\, Gary Clark Jr\, Yusuf (Cat Stevens)\, Aaron Frazer\, Gaslamp Killer\, Saul Williams and countless others. This is his weekly “mixtape love letter” to the world\, weaving a rich\, soulful tapestry of culture and emotion. LISTEN BACK TO THE ARCHIVES AT WWW.KCRW.COM/JEREMYSOLE \nAs Co-Founder and resident DJ of AFRO FUNKÉ\, Sole and his partners drew a loyal crowd to the now-legendary Zanzibar in Santa Monica every week for 15 years. This was his arena for Afrobeat\, Latin\, Brazilian\, Jamaican and other sounds from around the world. Hundreds of international artists and deejays joined him on stage over the years – memories of Prince and his entourage on the dancefloor and impromptu jam sessions with Stevie Wonder\, Zap Mama and other legends. \nLE FRIQUE SONIQUE\, his newest incarnation\, is the only recurring event he currently curates and produces\, flying in his absolute bucket list of world renowned DJ and musician friends to join him at his monthly soundclash at the Moroccan Lounge\, on the outskirts of Little Tokyo and the DTLA Arts District. \nSole has also produced official remixes for BECK (US)\, FEMI KUTI (Nigeria)\, JAZZANOVA (Germany)\, THIEVERY CORPORATION (US)\, ALSARAH (Sudan)\, SOLA ROSA (New Zealand)\, NOVALIMA (Peru)\, ROCKY DAWUNI (Ghana)\, QUANTIC (Colombia)\, DOM LA NENA (Brasil) and others. \n. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .• CLIENTS: Apple\, Ace Hotels\, David Lynch Foundation\, Ford Theatre\, The Getty Museum\, Grand Park\, Grand Performances\, Herman Miller\, Hollywood Bowl\, House Of Blues\, Mike D (Beastie Boys)\, The MOCA\, NeueHouse\, Nike\, Obey/Shepherd Fairey\, Paul Allen\, Quincy Jones\, Sony\, Tourism Australia.. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . \n• PRESS/ARTIST QUOTES: \n“Jeremy Sole is one of the deejays that we both admire hugely and certainly check his lists and radio show …a real sort-of bohemian of the old school variety. SUMMARY:Sachiko Kanenobu with DJ sets by Carlos Niño
DESCRIPTION:Please welcome legendary Japanese singer-songwriter on her first ever performance in Topanga Canyon\, with Carlos Niño as your DJ host.\n\n\nSachiko Kanenobu is generally acknowledged as Japan’s first female folk-rock singer-songwriter. She was discovered as a precocious 18-year-old in 1968 and signed to Japan’s first independent record company URC (Underground Record Club)\, which changed Japan’s musical landscape. In 1972\, the label released her first album\, ‘Misora\,’ co-produced by Haruomi Hosono (bassist and creator of Happy End and\, later\, Yellow Magic Orchestra\, as well as a solo artist in his own right). \n \nA few months before the release of her debut album in 1972\, Sachiko left Japan and married music critic Paul Williams\, with whom she had two sons. In 1976\, she met world-renowned science fiction author Philip K. Dick. When PKD heard her album ‘Misora\,’ he encouraged her to return to writing songs and in 1981\, he released her first American single ‘Fork In The Road / Tokyo Song.’ Sachiko started performing again and PKD planned to produce her first full-length English-language album\, but unfortunately died by stroke in March\, 1982. \n \nSachiko continued to perform and release albums with her rock band Culture Shock\, as well as solo. Starting in the 1990’s\, her debut album\, ‘Misora\,’ found a new generation of fans in Japan. In 2019\, the Light In The Attic label reissued ‘Misora’ in the US\, which led to greater international awareness of her music. A new version of her second album\, ‘Fork In The Road\,’ produced by Makoto Kubota\, was released by Better Days / Columbia Records in Japan in 2023. \nAt 76 years of age\, Sachiko continues to write and perform. Tours have taken her to Japan\, Europe\, LA and NYC\, where she played at the annual event SummerStage in Central Park. Her song ‘Aoi Sakana (Blue Fish)’ from ‘Misora’ was used in the soundtrack of Wim Wenders’ film ‘Perfect Days\,’ which was nominated for ‘Best International Feature’ at the 2024 Academy Awards.

SUMMARY:Where Olive Trees Weep
DESCRIPTION:Where Olive Trees Weep offers a searing window into the struggles and resilience of the Palestinian people under Israeli occupation. It explores themes of loss\, trauma\, and the quest for justice. We follow\, among others\, Palestinian journalist and therapist Ashira Darwish\, grassroots activist Ahed Tamimi\, and Israeli journalist Amira Hass. We witness Dr. Gabor Maté offering trauma-healing work for a group of women who have been tortured in Israeli prisons. Ancient landscapes bear deep scars\, having witnessed the brutal reality of ancestral land confiscation\, expulsions\, imprisonment\, home demolitions\, water deprivation\, and denial of basic human rights. Yet\, through the veil of oppression\, we catch a glimpse of resilience—deep roots that have carried the Palestinian people through decades of darkness and shattered lives. This emotional journey bares the humanity of the oppressed while grappling with the question: what makes the oppressor so ruthlessly blind to its own cruelty? \nThis film is offered for free\, but donations would greatly appreciated.

This is why the Paris-born\, L.A.-based artist is considered one of the most versatile and musically diverse violinists today. \nDUSTY BROUGH\, GUITAR Guitarist Dusty Brough brilliantly combines his roots in Flamenco with Jazz\, Folk\, Brazilian\, Gypsy and Balkan music. As a composer\, he integrates these eclectic influences with his unique approach to music and a “blatant disregard for genre boxes” (Joe Bendel\, Epoch Times). Brough’s nylon-string guitar playing is marked by an unparalleled agile technique that supports a buoyant aesthetic. Dusty creates something truly remarkable by seamlessly blending lush harmonies\, intricate rhythms and improvisation\, with a fluidity\, presence\, and rhythm that can only be compared to the rolling waves of the ocean. \n* MILES JAY ~ (Multifaceted virtuoso Double Bass\, Buzuk & Lyra )Miles Jay is a composer and instrument maker\, and an active performer with many prominent artists around the world. Broad in range of his musical influences and communities\, Miles has lived abroad for years absorbing styles from many traditions\, and has performed in such venues as Carnegie Hall\, the Emirates Palace Abu Dhabi\, and the United Nations. \nFrom 2005 to 2012\, Miles lived in Egypt and Lebanon\, performing and collaborating with many beloved artists of the region\, including Youssou N’Dour\, Ziad Rahbani\, Naseer Shamma\, Ross Daly\, and the Cairo Symphony Orchestra. During this time he co-founded and co-produced several ensembles and albums\, as well as traveled extensively around the region for concerts in Dubai\, Turkey\, Greece\, Tunisia\, Oman\, Algeria\, Senegal\, Syria\, and Western Europe. Active in studios as well\, Miles worked with composer Khaled Mouzannar as music consultant and instrumentalist on the score to Nadine Labaki’s latest film “Where do we go Now\,” an official selection of both Sundance and Cannes. Throughout all of this valuable experience\, Miles focused on re-imagining the bass’s role both as an accompanying instrumental and as a melodic lead\, adapting a wide range of Arabic\, Greek\, and Turkish ornamentation to develop his own extended technique when playing with a bow. \nSome of Axon’s special collaborators are \n Dan Cantrell\, Noam Israeli Devon Taylor “TUBA RED”

SUMMARY:Qwanqwa - ቋንቋ Experimental Ethiopian Supergroup in Topanga Canyon
DESCRIPTION:Qwanqwa is a supergroup of musicians from the baddest bands of Addis Ababa\, Ethiopia.\n\n\nCorazon is honored to announce Fri May 17th\, 2024 at 9pm\, live and direct from the Horn of Africa\, Ethiopia’s QWANQWA return to North America–and to Corazon’s eclectic ethnic music hub in Topanga Canyon. \nQwanqwa is a supergroup of musicians from the baddest bands of Addis Ababa\, Ethiopia. Brought together by a shared passion for the power of Ethiopian music\, this 5-piece shines with an experimentalism and virtuosity based in deeply rooted traditions. With swirling masinko (one-stringed fiddle)\, wah-wah-violin\, bass krar boom\, and the unstoppable rhythm of heavy kebero (goat-skin drum) beats\, powerful traditional lead African diva vocals\, Qwanqwa keeps the people wrapped in celebratory attention. After making a splash at world-renowned festivals Roskilde and WOMEX and three successful European tours under their belt\, this world-traveling ensemble is hitting the road for a MacArthur Foundation-backed debut US tour in 2022. \n \n\nTICKETS ARE $45 or 2 for $80 \n$25 Corazon members (must have an active monthly membership of any level)\n\n \nQwanqwa draws inspiration from East Africa regions of Ethiopia and beyond. Delving deep into regional beats and moods\, the repertoire ranges from the trance-like songs of the Eritrean tribe of Blen to Somalian rock numbers to Mahmoud Ahmed sing-a-longs. The music is characterized by tight arrangements and extended improvisation. The live show ranges from intimate to wild\, from whispery conversations to full blown rock show\, with psychedelic sounds that are hard to believe come from traditional harp and violin. It is driving\, powerful\, and different than anything else coming out of Ethiopia in this current Golden Age of Ethiopian music. \nThe ensemble was founded in 2012 by American violinist Kaethe Hostetter\, who first worked in Ethiopian music as a founding member of critically acclaimed Sub Pop recording artists Debo Band. Since relocating to Addis in 2009\, she has participated in numerous exploratory and professional projects\, as she honed her sound and immersed herself further into the culture of her surroundings. In this sense\, Qwanqwa\, the Amharic word for “language\,” is a project creating dialogues between cultures. \nCurrent members of Qwanqwa are Endris Hassen (masinko)\, Kaethe Hostetter (violin)\, Bubu Teklemariam (bass krar)\, Selamnesh Zemene (vocalist)\, and Misale Legesse (kebero). They have appeared internationally with Getachew Mekuria\, The EX\, Thurston Moore\, Fred Frith\, Butch Morris\, Debo Band\, Nile Project\, Fendika\, Mahmoud Ahmed\, Mulatu Astatke\, Addis Acoustic\, Ethiocolor\, Atse Teodros\, Mohammed “Jimmy” Mohammed\, and Imperial Tiger Orchestra\, and have played stages from Lincoln Center to Bonnaroo\, Jazzfest (New Orleans)\, Moers Festival\, Roskilde\, WOMEX\, WOMAD and more. \nAn integral and constant presence in Addis Ababa nightlife scene\, Qwanqwa has released three albums: Volume One (2014)\, Volume Two (2015)\, and Volume Three (2020). \n \nHardship tickets are also available. BYOB is fine. Enjoy dinner prior at Endless Colors Pizza next door…Outside listening areas are available as well!

SUMMARY:Mariee Siou in Topanga Canyon
DESCRIPTION:Mariee Siou is a healing singer\, wordsmith and visionary artist\, channeling and transmitting medicinal qualities through her folk music\n\n\nDon’t miss the magic and wordsmithing of this visionary folk artist (and peace activist) in Topanga Canyon on Thursday May 16th! Mariee Siou is coming to Corazon and we are honored! Prepare for a very special evening in the heart vessel of this creative hub and eclectic space with the Corazon Secret Garden under the sycamore trees\, frogs and crickets will surely serenade! \n \n\nDoors 8:15pm \nPERFORMANCE: 8:30pm\n$25 chair / $20 pillow seating\n\nMariee Sioux Sobonya was born on the Humboldt coast in Arcata\, California. When she was two her family moved to the Sierra Nevada foothills in the Yuba River watershed in Northern California\, to pursue their dream of farming and living off the land. She was raised on their small farm whose surrounding lands were originally occupied by the Nisenan people before the cultural and environmental decimation that occurred at the hands of expansionist migrants and settlers during the gold rush\, and has come to be known as Nevada City (the Nisenan still survive in tragically small numbers and continue to fight for visibility and Federal recognition). \nMariee grew up surrounded and deeply touched by music—going to bluegrass festivals and listening to her father’s bluegrass band—but held no particular personal musical ambitions. However\, she taught herself to play the guitar at 18 while volunteering at a school for Mapuche children in Patagonia\, Argentina\, and wrote her first songs here while taking refuge from the Patagonia winds indoors. She continued finger picking and writing songs and would make two home-recorded albums purely at the urging of friends. In 2007 she released her first studio album\, Faces in the Rocks\, on which she collaborated with Native American flutist Gentle Thunder and which achieved a dedicated cult following that would propel her career to this day. She began touring Europe as well as North America and has continued ever since. \nMariee Siou has learned to more consciously embrace her role in the ancient and new tradition of healer-singers who have always helped hold the human social fabric together. Through music she attempts to fill a cultural void left by severed connections to her Polish\, Hungarian\, and Indigenous North American heritages and to thereby address the broader cultural voids felt by Americans today. She does this “with hopes of enticing the sacred work of grief back into our lives from the exile American society has placed it in”—and this is strongly evident in her 2019 release Grief in Exile\, as well as in her forthcoming EP Circle of Signs. \nThe songs continue to come to Mariee Siou\, and her approach as a singer continues to mature. The flowing melodies and quivering vibrato of her voice\, as well as the poetry itself\, continue to locate themselves and their work with a more solidly grounded precision as to just what that work is. Her most recent songs most deeply reflect this clarity of vision and acceptance of both her role as an artist and the endless need for that role in this changing world. Mariee Siou brings us back to the child and the grandmother in ourselves\, in a time in which it has never been more needed — and she intends to keep it up as long as she has a voice.
