SUMMARY:Mariee Siou in Topanga Canyon
DESCRIPTION:Mariee Siou is a healing singer\, wordsmith and visionary artist\, channeling and transmitting medicinal qualities through her folk music\n\n\nDon’t miss the magic and wordsmithing of this visionary folk artist (and peace activist) in Topanga Canyon on Thursday May 16th! Mariee Siou is coming to Corazon and we are honored! Prepare for a very special evening in the heart vessel of this creative hub and eclectic space with the Corazon Secret Garden under the sycamore trees\, frogs and crickets will surely serenade! \n \n\nDoors 8:15pm \nPERFORMANCE: 8:30pm\n$25 chair / $20 pillow seating\n\nMariee Sioux Sobonya was born on the Humboldt coast in Arcata\, California. When she was two her family moved to the Sierra Nevada foothills in the Yuba River watershed in Northern California\, to pursue their dream of farming and living off the land. She was raised on their small farm whose surrounding lands were originally occupied by the Nisenan people before the cultural and environmental decimation that occurred at the hands of expansionist migrants and settlers during the gold rush\, and has come to be known as Nevada City (the Nisenan still survive in tragically small numbers and continue to fight for visibility and Federal recognition). \nMariee grew up surrounded and deeply touched by music—going to bluegrass festivals and listening to her father’s bluegrass band—but held no particular personal musical ambitions. However\, she taught herself to play the guitar at 18 while volunteering at a school for Mapuche children in Patagonia\, Argentina\, and wrote her first songs here while taking refuge from the Patagonia winds indoors. She continued finger picking and writing songs and would make two home-recorded albums purely at the urging of friends. In 2007 she released her first studio album\, Faces in the Rocks\, on which she collaborated with Native American flutist Gentle Thunder and which achieved a dedicated cult following that would propel her career to this day. She began touring Europe as well as North America and has continued ever since. \nMariee Siou has learned to more consciously embrace her role in the ancient and new tradition of healer-singers who have always helped hold the human social fabric together. Through music she attempts to fill a cultural void left by severed connections to her Polish\, Hungarian\, and Indigenous North American heritages and to thereby address the broader cultural voids felt by Americans today. She does this “with hopes of enticing the sacred work of grief back into our lives from the exile American society has placed it in”—and this is strongly evident in her 2019 release Grief in Exile\, as well as in her forthcoming EP Circle of Signs. \nThe songs continue to come to Mariee Siou\, and her approach as a singer continues to mature. The flowing melodies and quivering vibrato of her voice\, as well as the poetry itself\, continue to locate themselves and their work with a more solidly grounded precision as to just what that work is. Her most recent songs most deeply reflect this clarity of vision and acceptance of both her role as an artist and the endless need for that role in this changing world. Mariee Siou brings us back to the child and the grandmother in ourselves\, in a time in which it has never been more needed — and she intends to keep it up as long as she has a voice.

SUMMARY:Qwanqwa - ቋንቋ Experimental Ethiopian Supergroup in Topanga Canyon
DESCRIPTION:Qwanqwa is a supergroup of musicians from the baddest bands of Addis Ababa\, Ethiopia.\n\n\nCorazon is honored to announce Fri May 17th\, 2024 at 9pm\, live and direct from the Horn of Africa\, Ethiopia’s QWANQWA return to North America–and to Corazon’s eclectic ethnic music hub in Topanga Canyon. \nQwanqwa is a supergroup of musicians from the baddest bands of Addis Ababa\, Ethiopia. Brought together by a shared passion for the power of Ethiopian music\, this 5-piece shines with an experimentalism and virtuosity based in deeply rooted traditions. With swirling masinko (one-stringed fiddle)\, wah-wah-violin\, bass krar boom\, and the unstoppable rhythm of heavy kebero (goat-skin drum) beats\, powerful traditional lead African diva vocals\, Qwanqwa keeps the people wrapped in celebratory attention. After making a splash at world-renowned festivals Roskilde and WOMEX and three successful European tours under their belt\, this world-traveling ensemble is hitting the road for a MacArthur Foundation-backed debut US tour in 2022. \n \n\nTICKETS ARE $45 or 2 for $80 \n$25 Corazon members (must have an active monthly membership of any level)\n\n \nQwanqwa draws inspiration from East Africa regions of Ethiopia and beyond. Delving deep into regional beats and moods\, the repertoire ranges from the trance-like songs of the Eritrean tribe of Blen to Somalian rock numbers to Mahmoud Ahmed sing-a-longs. The music is characterized by tight arrangements and extended improvisation. The live show ranges from intimate to wild\, from whispery conversations to full blown rock show\, with psychedelic sounds that are hard to believe come from traditional harp and violin. It is driving\, powerful\, and different than anything else coming out of Ethiopia in this current Golden Age of Ethiopian music. \nThe ensemble was founded in 2012 by American violinist Kaethe Hostetter\, who first worked in Ethiopian music as a founding member of critically acclaimed Sub Pop recording artists Debo Band. Since relocating to Addis in 2009\, she has participated in numerous exploratory and professional projects\, as she honed her sound and immersed herself further into the culture of her surroundings. In this sense\, Qwanqwa\, the Amharic word for “language\,” is a project creating dialogues between cultures. \nCurrent members of Qwanqwa are Endris Hassen (masinko)\, Kaethe Hostetter (violin)\, Bubu Teklemariam (bass krar)\, Selamnesh Zemene (vocalist)\, and Misale Legesse (kebero). They have appeared internationally with Getachew Mekuria\, The EX\, Thurston Moore\, Fred Frith\, Butch Morris\, Debo Band\, Nile Project\, Fendika\, Mahmoud Ahmed\, Mulatu Astatke\, Addis Acoustic\, Ethiocolor\, Atse Teodros\, Mohammed “Jimmy” Mohammed\, and Imperial Tiger Orchestra\, and have played stages from Lincoln Center to Bonnaroo\, Jazzfest (New Orleans)\, Moers Festival\, Roskilde\, WOMEX\, WOMAD and more. \nAn integral and constant presence in Addis Ababa nightlife scene\, Qwanqwa has released three albums: Volume One (2014)\, Volume Two (2015)\, and Volume Three (2020). \n \nHardship tickets are also available. BYOB is fine. Enjoy dinner prior at Endless Colors Pizza next door…Outside listening areas are available as well!
