Don’t miss out on this opportunity to experience the magic of the big screen with fellow film enthusiasts. \n \nABOUT THE FILM: \nIn Cuba\, where people fled en masse from Fidel Castro’s regime\, surfing and other water activities have been banned for decades. Today\, surfing exists in a murky legal gray area and is viewed with suspicion by the Cuban authorities. \nDespite these challenges\, a group of passionate Cuban surfers is determined to carve out a place for surfing in the country’s culture of athletic excellence. Frank is the group’s de facto leader\, and many regard to be the best surfer on the island. Yaya is a community leader and surfer who is determined to ensure that the next generation can surf freely. When surfing is announced as an official sport for the Tokyo Olympics\, they see their chance to bring their sport out of the shadows and on to the world stage. What follows is a tale of underground surfers building their own boards from scratch\, dodging the authorities as they travel the island looking for the perfect wave\, and attempting to legitimize their passion by persuading the Cuban authorities to field an Olympic team. \nWhen Frank is invited to participate in a qualifier event out of the country\, he must decide whether to compete\, which would mean embarking on an illegal journey and risking permanent separation from his wife and newborn baby. Yaya is similarly torn when she is invited to participate in a surf symposium in Hawaii. Havana Libre is a story of people following their passion at great danger to themselves and ultimately begs the question: what would you risk to chase your dreams?

He leads the acclaimed modern tango outfits Charles Gorczynski Tango Quartet and Redwood Tango Ensemble\, and is the director of the Twin Cities Tango Collective. Charles is a deeply established musician and community organizer with a distinct voice in creative new music\, stemming from his upbringing in jazz/improvised music and decades of tango composition and performance. His projects Redwood Tango Ensemble and Colorlist have toured North America and Europe extensively\, playing hundreds of performances annually and producing four albums of original contemporary tango music. Charles has premiered his compositions with Chamber Music Northwest Festival and the San Francisco International Arts Festival\, worked with the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra\, the Chicago Chorale\, the California Symphony\, Vocal Essence at Orchestra Hall\, Mason Bates’ Mercury Soul Orchestra\, and many other orchestral and chamber music organizations. Charles has recorded and toured with international tango projects\, including Mariano Barreiro Tango Trio\, Tango BC Quartet\, Alejandro Ziegler Cuarteto\, Maxi Larrea Trio\, Maldito Tango\, and Los Tangueros Del Oeste. \n \nBASMA EDREES \nBasma Edrees is a graduate of The Juilliard School where she received her Masters in Violin Performance and Mannes School of Music where she received her Bachelors degree.  \nBasma has performed as a soloist in various countries including the USA\, Montenegro\, Ethiopia and her native country\, Egypt.  \nEqually at home with Arabic music\, Basma is the founder of Music in-Takht; an instrumental ensemble dedicated to preserving Egyptian musical heritage in the SF Bay Area. She performed with renowned musicians from the Arab world and has been invited to give Arabic Music workshops at UC Berkeley and Stanford. \nThrough the music of Astor Piazzolla\, Basma was introduced to the world of Argentine Tango music where she encountered some of the most beautiful lyrical melodies she had ever heard. Playing Tango\, Basma found a medium where her Western classical training and the sentiments of her Arab musical heritage could come together. Basma studied Tango violin with Guillermo Rubino\, who is the director of strings at the Orquesta Escuela de Tango Emilio Balcarce. She is currently a member of Lee/Edrees Tango Duo with Bay Area Tango pianist Sumi Lee as well as the Charles Gorczynski Tango quartet West. \n \nELYSE WEAKLEY \nElyse Weakley has taken part in a wide array of musical projects and has served in many roles including: music director\, pianist\, educator and composer. Throughout her career she has performed many contemporary works and has frequently collaborated directly with composers and songwriters in recording and presenting their music as a soloist and collaborator including The Hurd Ensemble and Redwood Tango Ensemble. \n \nSascha Jacobsen – Contrabass \nJacobsen was born in a remote cabin in the woods in 1973 to “hippie” parents who moved from the Haight-Ashbury district in San Francisco to Humboldt County and grew vegetables. And although his parents were not particularly musical\, you could say he has musical genes. His great-great-great-great grandfather was a bassist for the Moscow Opera and his great-grandfather\, his namesake\, was a famous Russian violinist who became the concertmaster of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and gave lessons to his friend\, Albert Einstein.

DESCRIPTION:Mia Doi Todd performs with Andres Renteria and Jesse Peterson in celebration of the vinyl release of her instrumental album Morning Music.\n\n\nMia Doi Todd is known for her quiet\, haunting songs\, usually conveyed through her evocative and instantly recognizable voice. With a deep body of work spanning twelve albums\, and as a collaborator on records by Laraaji\, José Gonzalez\, Tunde Adebimpe (TV on the Radio)\, Scientist\, and more recently with André 3000 and Carlos Niño on New Blue Sun\, Mia is an essential element in the richly woven tapestry of underground music in her native Los Angeles. \n \nMorning Music is an instrumental\, ambient experience unlike anything else in her catalog. Originally released as a CD in 2009 and now available for the first time on vinyl\, Mia chose to forgo vocal expression and give full range to the voices of her instruments and the sounds around them. It is a gorgeous\, softly stirring work of art that makes full use of its minimal elements. Mia recorded and mixed the tracks at her own Château des Chats Studio in Frogtown\, Los Angeles\, playing harmonium\, piano\, tin whistle\, tamboura\, acoustic guitar\, and drums. On the tracks “Samai’i” and “Emotion\,” she is joined by multi-instrumentalist Andres Renteria on cajon\, piano\, wooden stool\, and udu. Birds and traffic\, heard softly in the distance\, feel like a natural and comforting part of the proceedings. The small dramas of the piano and tin whistle resolve peacefully\, like thoughts arising and falling in meditation.
