SUMMARY:MAETAR in Topanga Canyon
DESCRIPTION:Maetar: World Groove Eclectic Avant Funk Jazz with a Middle Eastern Twist\n\n\nSAT NOV 18th MAETAR: “World Groove Eclectic Avant Funk Jazz with a Middle Eastern Twist”. with special guests \n8:30 doors open 9pm music starts \n$30 GTD SIT-DOWN CHAIR \n$20 dancing\, limited pillow seating & garden access \n$15 Corazon Membership Discount price \nMaetar’s music can be described as “World Groove Eclectic Avant Funk Jazz with a Middle Eastern Twist”. Imagine if Miles Davis and Jimi Hendrix had a musical baby in the Delta of the Nile\, and George Clinton was the midwife\, it might sound like Maetar. \nItai Disraeli – Bass \nHagai Izraeli – Horns \nRichard Fultineer – Drums \nBrothers Itai (bass) and Hagai (horns) were born in war torn Israel on a kibbutz and started making music at the age of six and four. The whole family use to gather around their grandfather’s table every Saturday and jam. They grew into legitimate musicians; Hagai became a soloist with Israeli orchestras and Itai became a celebrated and sought after bassist\, winning “Bass Player of the year”. \nDetermined to use their music as an instrument of peace and joined by renowned drummer/world percussionist\, Richard Fultineer\, Maetar forged their sound and style. \nTheir concerts for human rights and peace have brought Arab\, Israeli\, Muslim\, Christian\, and Buddhist musicians and communities together. Maetar’s music is a declaration of peace\, calling on Hebrew and Arabic melodies\, filtering it through a rigorous jazz perspective\, and the exuberance of funk\, soul\, afrobeat\, and rock. Playing native instruments from the world over\, employing rhythms and melodic modes from various cultures\, Maetar brothers embody the universal language of music with their original sound\, inspirational melodies\, seductive grooves and inventive use of modern technology. \nMaetar as created a body of work that has been featured in concert halls\, festivals\, movies and television. Playing and recording with great musicians from around the world such as James Gadson\, Jackson Browne\, Roger Waters\, Susanna Hoff (Bangles)\, Tony Allen (Fella Kuti)\, Trilok Gurtu\, Larry Coryell\, Nishat Khan\, Prince Diabate of Guinea and Omar Faruk Tekbilek to name a few\, helped the band shape its sound and inspired it to dig deeper. \nThe new Maetar cycle of works celebrates the group’s forging a new musical path. Desiring to create an original musical language that will express their passion for peace and reach across borders\, the band once declined public appearances for 3 years and woodshed in a loft over a vintage pirate outfit factory. The mindset of deep listening as foundation for peace led to the operative mode “CPWO” – Completely Present and Wide-Open – playing live in the same room\, no charts\, overdubs\, click track and clichés. Instead\, creating an environment in which all participants interact equally\, listening deeply\, being in the moment without preconceived notions and patiently exploring the elements of music. \nThis discipline led to many hours of experimentation with the sounds of diverse instruments\, rhythms\, modes\, grooving\, looping\, layering and shaping. The band recorded the sessions\, analyzed and discussed intent and impact\, which led to greater communication and expression\, and to the development of the Urban Crawl\, Abstract One Drop\, Nu World Groove\, Tone Poems and Meditative Soundscapes styles. This is the evolution of Maetar’s signature sound and the cycle of works. The tones and sounds the band produces create a sonic wave that is encoded with peace\, freedom\, and creativity.

SUMMARY:Father-Son Songwriters
DESCRIPTION:Father-Son Songwriters\, Ethan “Emaginario” Margolis and Ken Margolis perform together for simultaneous album releases.\n\n\nFather-Son Songwriters\, Ethan “Emaginario” Margolis and Ken Margolis perform together for simultaneous album releases. They will be accompanied by John Leftwich on bass and Chris Wabich on drums. \nFriday\, November 17th\, 2023 @8:00pm – 10pm \n7:30pm Doors Open \n$20 Tickets / $30 for two \nBYOB allowed \n \nEthan Margolis – guitar/vocals \nKen Margolis – keyboards/vocals \nJohn Leftwich – upright bass \nChris Wabich – drums \n \nBIOGRAPHIES \nEthan Margolis aka Emaginario:
World-traversed and genre-fluid guitarist Ethan Margolis\, aka “Emaginario\,” is a prime example of an artist who has become greater than the sum of his many parts. His distinctive story\, which has encompassed evolutionary periods in Spain and Los Angeles begins just outside Cleveland\, Ohio\, in the embrace of a musical household. His familial heritage also extends into the Deep South\, a root system instilling roots music consciousness. He spent 11 years immersing himself in the Roma (Gitano) musical circuit in Andalucía and later disciplined with the Pinini Family of Roma singers in Lebrija\, Spain\, which is one of the birthplaces for roots Flamenco music. Returning to the United States in 2010 while simultaneously staying active in Andalusia\, Margolis has retained his own “sketches of Spain” and its music while incorporating other popular musical idioms— including Jazz\, Blues\, Cuban\, and Americana into his ever-expanding musical repertoire. His album releases and production work bring this repertoire into full focus. The sounds of the Andalusian experience can be found throughout his recordings as well as his deep interest in Jazz and Delta Blues. His discography so far encompasses albums as a leader\, such as Songs of Mind\, Soleángeles\, Arsa 100\, En Madrid\, Speakeasy Session\, and Sonikete Blues. The latter album garnered generous critical kudos\, including a ringing endorsement from prominent Madrid-based critic José Manuel Gómez\, declaring it one of the top 40 flamenco fusion albums of all time. Most recently Margolis has collaborated on albums with Larry Grenadier\, Eric Harland\, Chano Domínguez\, Pedrito Martínez and Caramelo de Cuba. \nKen Margolis:
Born near the shores of Lake Erie in the industrial town of Cleveland\, Ohio\, Ken Margolis is an accomplished songwriter\, keyboardist and vocalist. He learned to play the piano by ear and was drawn to playing with other budding musicians during the revolution of popular music that occurred during the 60’s and 70’s. Throughout the early years in Cleveland\, he played keyboards with the power-pop group\, The Choir and was a contemporary with many of the up-and-coming musicians in the early stages of their careers including Wally Bryson\, Joe Walsh\, Joe Vitale\, Eric Carmen – like them he thrived in the creativity of that musical renaissance. In later years\, he shared the stage with many luminaries such as the Who\, Herman’s Hermits\, Bo Diddley\, Jerry Lee Lewis\, Bobby Womack and others. He appeared at the “Topping the Rock” Ceremony at the Rock ’n Roll Hall of Fame\, the Tri-C Rock Festival and the Undercurrents Showcases. Now living in Santa Cruz\, California\, he continues to play with many of the area’s top musicians and has been nurturing his growing interest in songs that explore the intersection of human struggle and the natural world. His newest album release entitled Hope And Courage was produced and arranged by his son\, Ethan\, and mixed by Dave O’Donnell\, producer/engineer for James Taylor and Keith Richards.

Southern Italian and Brazilian purification rites and procession performed in the summer to honor the archetypical sea goddess. In Brazil she comes from the West African Yoruba culture and is called Yemanja \, in Italy she is called the Black Madonna of the Sea (once called Aphrodite). Internationally renowned singer\, percussionist\, dancer and REMO Artist Alessandra Belloni will be playing the ocean drum\, recreating the sound of the waves of the ocean \, her Yemanja drum made by Remo that combines the sound of the water with the drum\, her line of Southern Italian tambourines and frame drums accompanied by a small ensemble of singers and percussionists. \nSouthern Italy and Brazil share their common roots in Africa and worship of the Black Madonna as African Mother. \nFollowing Alessandra’s book\, “Healing Journeys with the Black Madonna” (Inner Traditions Bear and Co.\, 2019)https://www.amazon.com/Healing-Journeys-Black- Madonna-Practices/dp/15914 The concert will narrate the legend of the 7 Sisters \, or seven Black Madonnas: \nThe last one was believed to be the ugliest so she ran away to a high mountain “Mount Partenio” so that the pilgrims had to search hard to find her. When they found Her they saw that she was the most beautiful of all\, She was Black and they called her “Mamma Schiavona” the nurturing\, serving mother\, to be found now in MONTEVERGINE. She is also the patron of the gay & transgenders. \nThese Madonnas are connected to seven Goddesses that are part of the ancient worship of Mother Earth and the archetype of the African Mother\, especially Isis from Egypt. \nCountries around the world\, including Southern Italy\, Brazil\, Africa and the Middle East have musical traditions based on the power of women chants & drumming. Belloni and company will emulate one of the most ancient ways of praying and healing\, including sacred chanting to the Black Madonna sung by female voices in harmony\, accompanied by various percussion instruments (frame drums\, tambourines\, shakers\, djembes\, dumbecks\, riqqs\,). Dancers will spin and stomp their feet in celebration of life and peace..

So mark your calendars and get ready to boogie the night away! \nThe Dirty Lowdown is a Late 70’s and Early 80’s cover band that is Southern California’s dirty little secret. They play the forgotten hits and jams from that era: the FM Classics\, AM Gold\, Classic Rock\, Yacht Rock\, and Dance Rock. In the short time together we have performed in a variety of locations and events\, from private parties\, to bars\, clubs\, and festivals\, and even once on a float in a parade. Our extensive song list focuses mainly on the songs most other bands avoid from the ’70s and Early 80’s that people miss hearing\, singing along to\, and dancing to. They’ve even done several one-off themed tribute nights to David Bowie\, the Rolling Stones\, Prince\, Queen\, ZZ Top\, John Cougar Mellencamp and even songs from the year 1977. Reinterpreting the classics for maximum effect. That’s the DIRTY LOWDOWN. Anything can happen at our shows\, sometimes audience members come up on stage and join because anything goes. And the rule is anyone who gets on our stage gets a special\, secret\, dirty lowdown name\, too. We love to play and we come at it any way we can because it’s always a party when we do. It’s always a Dirty Lowdown Throw Down. Join us! \n\nHarry LeDjangles – Guitar and Vocals
\nSpider MacKenzie – Drums and Spirit
\nNigel Ambrose – Bass and Vocals \nKurt Zweiler – Keys and Vocals\n
Sweet Lou Montague – Lead Vocals\n\n “Psycho Ranger” is a dynamic band that channels the electrifying spirit of the 80’s through their blend of Rock and Dance music. They met each other in the parking lot of a Duran Duran show buying bootleg T-Shirts. Hailing from diverse musical backgrounds\, the band members unite to create a sonic journey that pays homage to the iconic era. With infectious rhythms and unforgettable melodies\, they transport audiences back to the neon-soaked dance floors and stadium rock anthems of the 80’s. “Psycho Ranger” infuses their performances with high-energy charisma\, ensuring every show is an exhilarating trip down memory lane. Relive the magic of the 80’s with “Psycho Ranger” and experience a musical time warp like no other. \n\n Jeremy Jeremy on Guitar\n Gio Gio on Vocals \nAdam Adam on Bass \nMark Mark on Keys \nAmos Amos on Drums

SUMMARY:King Corduroy & Dayna Bee
DESCRIPTION:Texas electric blues\, Memphis soul\, New Orleans voodoo funk\, the Tulsa groove & Mississippi Delta blues\, storytellers in Topanga Canyon\n\n\nIt’s like hot grease & warm pot liquor. 8:30PM 2 SETS\, SATURDAY\, OCT 14th Dayna Bee & King Corduroy in Concert at the eclectic Corazon Performing Arts space in Topanga Canyon. $20 bucks mixed seating and dancing space. \nKING CORDUROY is a modern songwriter inspired by the swampy grit\, juke-joint swagger\, and countrified twang of old-school American roots music\, and he has been chasing his singular muse for years\, making his own kind of “cosmic southern soul music” along the way. \nIt’s a sound anchored by a genuine reverence for the good stuff — including Texas electric blues\, Memphis soul\, New Orleans voodoo funk\, the Tulsa groove and Mississippi Delta blues — and updated to suit the unique experience of a storyteller\, multi-instrumentalist\, wandering troubadour\, and larger-than-life frontman who’s lived everywhere from the Bible Belt to the Mexican Baja. Those travels play a central role on King Corduroy’s fourth release\, Avalon Ave.\, whose five songs match King Corduroy’s colorful appearance — equal parts 1970s-era Leon Russell\, Southern rock bluesman\, and hippie mystic — with soulful performances and real-life stories sourced from his own rambles. \nDAYNA BEE is an artist\, multi instrumentalist and string arranger based out of Nashville\, TN\, by way of the Sunshine State. Dayna has performed live and/or worked in the studio with artists such as Johnny Mathis\, ELO\, Trampled by Turtles\, Joshua Hedley\, The War & Treaty\, Al Stewart\, Alan Parsons\, Dennis Deyoung (of Styx)\, Josh Groban\, and Natalie Merchant. Dayna has performed on many stages\, including: at the Grand Ole Opry\, Red Rocks Amphitheater\, Telluride Bluegrass Festival\, and Bridgestone Arena and The Ryman Auditorium in Nashville\, Tennessee. She is available for session work in the studio or remotely from her home studio as well as string arranging. \n$20 BYOB or 2 people for $30. \nCorazon Membership Discount $12 bucks!!

SUMMARY:Norton Wisdom and Electric Coyote Orchestra Art & Music in Topanga
DESCRIPTION:Live Painter & Sonic Ambient Dreamy music accompaniment. A student of the luminous John Altoon (one of the preeminent artists of West Coast avant-gardism of the 50’s and 60’s)\, Wisdom was introduced\, not only to the fundamentals of figure drawing\, but also to the bold conceptual-based and humanistic thinking which would lay the groundwork for his future endeavors and Peter Voulkos premier Modernist ceramic sculpture and Painter.\n \n \nWisdom first began exhibiting his own work in San Francisco in the 1970s but withdrew all of his work from galleries in 1974 and spent the following eight years immersed in studio work. That same year he became a lifeguard and the endless hours he spent staring out at the ocean while working on the beaches of Malibu\, Topanga and Zuma contributed to his minimalist vision as a painter. In the oct 1981 while in Germany for an exhibition\, Wisdom painted over 150 meters of the East side of the Berlin wall during the night using searchlights to illuminate his work. He was subsequently arrested\, detained\, and sent back to the U.S. but the experience convinced him that he could no longer work in the static studio environment and soon he began collaborating with punk bands and working in a performative style. Wisdom has been painting to live music ever since with bands like Panic and Banyan along with musicians such as Ireesh Lal (Artronika)\, Nels Cline (Wilco)\, Mike Watt (Iggy Pop)\, and Stephen Perkins (Jane’s Addiction)\, Robby Krieger (The Doors)\, Rich Robinson (The Black Crows) Richie Havens\, Kris Kristofferson and George Clinton to name a few. His live\, improvisational paintings are temporary interpretations of music that only exist during the space of the performance.\n \n \nNels Cline and Wisdom have collaborated on the project ‘Stained Radiance’ for the last 20 years and have performed at the New York Winter Jazz Fest\, The Fender 50 year Anniversary Celebration of the Jazz Master Guitar at the Knitting Factory (New York)\, Solid Sound Festival at Massachusetts Museum of Art\, Crystal Museum of Art (Arkansas)\, Musik New Music Festival (Victoria\, Canada) and the Big Ear New Music Festival (Knoxville).\n \n \nWisdom has performed around the world at venues as varied as the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City to Coachella to the Butu Dance Company in Japan\, and locally at the Walt Disney Hall in downtown Los Angeles\, Laguna Art Museum\, the Skirball Museum\, and more. He has been live painting with the Los Angeles Flypoet’s Showcase for over 25 years. His paintings and sculptures can be found in the permanent collections of notable museums including the Sheldon Museum of Art Nebraska\, La Jolla Museum of Contemporary Art\, the Milwaukee Art Center\, Wisconsin\, The San Diego Museum of art and the Orange County Museum of Art. \nELECTRIC COYOTE ORCHESTRA:\n \n \nPerforming under the musical moniker ‘Electric Coyote Orchestra’\, LA based musician/artist/composer kp (kevin parker) creates ethereal soundscapes and dreamy compositions that seek solace in a modern world. Sparse arrangements surrender to swelling walls of sound that are simultaneously melancholy and hopeful. Shimmering guitars echo over swirling loops as time moves backwards and forwards.

With more than 30 albums under his belt\, including Topanga faves like Tim O’Gara\, Amilia K Spicer and Old Bull\, seven full length albums of his own\, and recent offerings by The Wholesome (July 2023)and Mark Joseph (Nov 2023)\, McCormick’s work is steadily and beautifully unfolding. \nOn his newest project\, a collaboration born with percussionist Greg Ellis\, McCormick is venturing into world music. Since bringing on the master Kora player Prince Diabaté\, the music has taken on an authentic African sound\, but with McCormick’s recording and production acumen\, a truly extraordinary thing is happening. \nFor this “Des Eaux” event\, Corazon Performing Arts will be treated to a rare presentation of this music. The three key members of the project will explore making this music live in front of your eyes and ears. \nEllis\, Diabaté and McCormick will present several of the pieces from the upcoming album\, as well as delving into some improvisations and sharing their unique talents in solo settings. \n \nPrince Diabaté \nPrince Diabaté hails from a prominent\, Malinké family from Guinea\, West Africa. He learned his art from his father\, Djéli Sori Diabaté. Breaking with tradition\, his father also taught Prince’s mother\, Hadja Djéli Sira Cissoko\, to play kora. The young boy became an exceptionally early starter by accompanying his parents to their concerts throughout West Africa. Despite his father’s disapproval\, he decided to make music his life. When he was eight years old\, former Guinean President\, Sekou Touré\, came to his home town\, Kindia\, for a celebration in Independence Square. Braving the outraged soldiers and his own fear\, the young musician grasped his kora\, threw himself at the President’s feet and played a special song for him. Greatly touched by his skill and audacity\, Sekou Touré became his benefactor\, enrolling him into the National Children’s Theatre in Conakry. At 16 years of age\, in Abidjan\, Ivory Coast\, he stumbled upon a videocassette of Jimi Hendrix and\, inspired by what he heard\, entered an international kora competition. Taking first prize that day he became known as ‘Prince Diabaté\, Prince of the Kora.’ \nIn 1986 he met the singer\, Amara Sanoh\, and the two started to perform together. In 1990 he won the “Découvertes” Award\, sponsored by Radio France Internationale. After 12 successful years on the international festival circuit\, touring in Africa\, Europe\, Canada and the USA the duo disbanded and Prince Diabate settled in Los Angeles\, USA. Prince Diabate has released four studio albums: Lamaranaa (Buda Musique/Allegro) in 1993\, New Life (Sunrise Records/Orchard) in 2001\, which features guest artists Michael Brook and Hassan Hakmoun; Djerelon (Kora Company Collection) was recorded in Guinea\, Conakry in 2006 and is arranged and produced by Kante Manfila\, longtime collaborator of Salif Keita. The album won the People’s Choice Awards (Vox Populi) in the Independent Music Awards for 2007: World Music (Traditional) category. \nHis latest album\, My Music\, was recorded in Guinea\, Conakry in 2022 and features Guinean and French artists. It was mixed in France and mastered in the USA. \nConsidered to be one of the leading kora players of his generation\, Prince Diabaté brings not only total mastery over his ancestral tradition\, but a commitment to renew it through fresh ideas and exchanges with musicians from many cultures. His years in the USA produced collaborations with artists and groups as diverse as The New Mexico Symphony Orchestra\, Adam del Monte (Flamenco)\, Grammy winner\, Ozomatli (Hip-Hop/Latin rock)and Grammy nominee\, Michael Brook. The musically adventurous griot has incorporated reggae\, rap and blues into his work occasionally punctuated by the funky \nuse of the wah-wah pedal. Lately he has adapted the music of the Wassolou to his repertoire\, which he plays\, self-taught on the kamelen n’goni. The result is entirely his own creation: a fresh\, powerful brand of twenty first century Manden music\, which remains strongly rooted in traditional codes and references. \nIn 2002\, he was a nominee for the LA Weekly Music Awards and the New Times Music Awards. He was also a finalist in the International Songwriting Contest for 2004 & 2005; and took first prize in the 2005 and 2006 Pacific Songwriting Competition. His work has attracted grants from Arts International; Alliance for California Traditional Arts; Los Angeles County Arts Commission\, Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department and the Durfee Foundation. Prince Diabate also maintains an active schedule as a lecturer on aspects of Mandinka music. He is also sought after for film and television projects in Hollywood including previous work with Academy Award winner Hans Zimmer & Grammy Award winner Heitor Pereira. \nThese days Prince Diabaté divides his time between France\, the USA and Guinea and is often on the move\, performing with his group. At the end of 2013 the Prince Diabate Music Academy was officially launched in Guinea. This new academy\, the first privately-funded establishment in Guinea\, is the result of Prince Diabaté’s desire to create an international music school specializing in stringed instruments and traditional flute. Construction is still underway and thanks to the encouragement of government ministers in Guinea and the generosity of private donors an official opening is scheduled for 2023/2024. \nGREG ELLIS : Recognized as one of the more innovative and versatile drummers in the world Greg Ellis has performed around the world and recorded with musical artists from over 30 countries including Mickey Hart\, Zakir Hussain\, KODO\, Bickram Ghosh\, Mahsa Vahdat\, Tord Gustavsen\, Yungchen Lhamo\, Chiwoniso Mairaire\, Sugizo\, Juno Reactor\, Billy Idol and many more. \nEllis has released many critically acclaimed albums with his groups Vas and Biomusique as well as his solo album Kala Rupa. His drumming can be heard on more than 150 film\, television and video game scores\, including 300\, Argo\, The Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions\, Iron Man\, Body of Lies\, Transformers: Age of Extinction\, Downsizing\, Salem\, Samurai Jack\, Far Cry 4 and God of War: Ascension. \nHe has composed music for numerous international film and television projects including the award winning documentaries Chasing Niagara and The Road to Fallujah. \nAs a passionate advocate for the healing and therapeutic aspects of organic sound and rhythm\, he has presented lectures on the topic at various conferences and institutions including The Woolf Institute in Cambridge\, England and Rutgers University. Ellis is also working on a documentary exploring the lost languages of rhythm in modern society and the impact of digital culture on music. \n \nHEATHER DONAVON: Heather Donavon is a unique crystal bowl practitioner who combines the “healing” aspects of crystal alchemy singing bowls with her singing skills to produce a calming and ethereal musical experience. \nWidely known as a session singer and live performer (Melody Gardot\, Keb’Mo’\, Ben Harper)\, and one half of the musical group Love Me in the Dark\, Donovan has an incomparable vocal gift. Her voice has been described as “dusky\,”a mezzo-soprano\, with an earthy soulful quality and wide range. \nOver the past decade she has been exploring different forms of spirituality and mindfulness\, a journey that has taken her from yoga\, to meditation\, found a home with crystal singing bowls\, where she can combine her singular skills in her advocacy for mental wellness.
