He deejayed for Sly Stone’s birthday party\, worked on music for a year with Ms. Lauryn Hill and enlisted the same Daptone musicians as Amy Winehouse to produce a live\, all-analog reimagining of the 1976 classic “Golden Years” for David Bowie in his final days. He was asked to spin traditional New Orleans funeral dirges atop a giant animatronic octopus with Susan Sarandon\, leading a procession of hundreds through Burning Man to bring Timothy Leary’s ashes to the temple. It’s been a wild and freaky ride. \nSole is most widely known for his weekly KCRW radio show\, now approaching its 17th year\, where he helped break many now-major artists with their first radio plays including Black Pumas\, Hiatus Kaiyote\, Michael Kiwanuka\, The Shakes (now Alabama Shakes). SUMMARY:Sachiko Kanenobu with DJ sets by Carlos Niño
DESCRIPTION:Please welcome legendary Japanese singer-songwriter on her first ever performance in Topanga Canyon\, with Carlos Niño as your DJ host.\n\n\nSachiko Kanenobu is generally acknowledged as Japan’s first female folk-rock singer-songwriter. She was discovered as a precocious 18-year-old in 1968 and signed to Japan’s first independent record company URC (Underground Record Club)\, which changed Japan’s musical landscape. In 1972\, the label released her first album\, ‘Misora\,’ co-produced by Haruomi Hosono (bassist and creator of Happy End and\, later\, Yellow Magic Orchestra\, as well as a solo artist in his own right). \n \nA few months before the release of her debut album in 1972\, Sachiko left Japan and married music critic Paul Williams\, with whom she had two sons. In 1976\, she met world-renowned science fiction author Philip K. Dick. When PKD heard her album ‘Misora\,’ he encouraged her to return to writing songs and in 1981\, he released her first American single ‘Fork In The Road / Tokyo Song.’ Sachiko started performing again and PKD planned to produce her first full-length English-language album\, but unfortunately died by stroke in March\, 1982. \n \nSachiko continued to perform and release albums with her rock band Culture Shock\, as well as solo. Starting in the 1990’s\, her debut album\, ‘Misora\,’ found a new generation of fans in Japan. In 2019\, the Light In The Attic label reissued ‘Misora’ in the US\, which led to greater international awareness of her music. A new version of her second album\, ‘Fork In The Road\,’ produced by Makoto Kubota\, was released by Better Days / Columbia Records in Japan in 2023. \nAt 76 years of age\, Sachiko continues to write and perform. Tours have taken her to Japan\, Europe\, LA and NYC\, where she played at the annual event SummerStage in Central Park. Her song ‘Aoi Sakana (Blue Fish)’ from ‘Misora’ was used in the soundtrack of Wim Wenders’ film ‘Perfect Days\,’ which was nominated for ‘Best International Feature’ at the 2024 Academy Awards.

We follow\, among others\, Palestinian journalist and therapist Ashira Darwish\, grassroots activist Ahed Tamimi\, and Israeli journalist Amira Hass. We witness Dr. Gabor Maté offering trauma-healing work for a group of women who have been tortured in Israeli prisons. Ancient landscapes bear deep scars\, having witnessed the brutal reality of ancestral land confiscation\, expulsions\, imprisonment\, home demolitions\, water deprivation\, and denial of basic human rights. Yet\, through the veil of oppression\, we catch a glimpse of resilience—deep roots that have carried the Palestinian people through decades of darkness and shattered lives. This emotional journey bares the humanity of the oppressed while grappling with the question: what makes the oppressor so ruthlessly blind to its own cruelty? \nThis film is offered for free\, but donations would greatly appreciated.

Broad in range of his musical influences and communities\, Miles has lived abroad for years absorbing styles from many traditions\, and has performed in such venues as Carnegie Hall\, the Emirates Palace Abu Dhabi\, and the United Nations. \nFrom 2005 to 2012\, Miles lived in Egypt and Lebanon\, performing and collaborating with many beloved artists of the region\, including Youssou N’Dour\, Ziad Rahbani\, Naseer Shamma\, Ross Daly\, and the Cairo Symphony Orchestra. During this time he co-founded and co-produced several ensembles and albums\, as well as traveled extensively around the region for concerts in Dubai\, Turkey\, Greece\, Tunisia\, Oman\, Algeria\, Senegal\, Syria\, and Western Europe. Brought together by a shared passion for the power of Ethiopian music\, this 5-piece shines with an experimentalism and virtuosity based in deeply rooted traditions. With swirling masinko (one-stringed fiddle)\, wah-wah-violin\, bass krar boom\, and the unstoppable rhythm of heavy kebero (goat-skin drum) beats\, powerful traditional lead African diva vocals\, Qwanqwa keeps the people wrapped in celebratory attention. Since relocating to Addis in 2009\, she has participated in numerous exploratory and professional projects\, as she honed her sound and immersed herself further into the culture of her surroundings. When she was two her family moved to the Sierra Nevada foothills in the Yuba River watershed in Northern California\, to pursue their dream of farming and living off the land. She was raised on their small farm whose surrounding lands were originally occupied by the Nisenan people before the cultural and environmental decimation that occurred at the hands of expansionist migrants and settlers during the gold rush\, and has come to be known as Nevada City (the Nisenan still survive in tragically small numbers and continue to fight for visibility and Federal recognition). \nMariee grew up surrounded and deeply touched by music—going to bluegrass festivals and listening to her father’s bluegrass band—but held no particular personal musical ambitions. However\, she taught herself to play the guitar at 18 while volunteering at a school for Mapuche children in Patagonia\, Argentina\, and wrote her first songs here while taking refuge from the Patagonia winds indoors. She continued finger picking and writing songs and would make two home-recorded albums purely at the urging of friends. In 2007 she released her first studio album\, Faces in the Rocks\, on which she collaborated with Native American flutist Gentle Thunder and which achieved a dedicated cult following that would propel her career to this day. She began touring Europe as well as North America and has continued ever since. \nMariee Siou has learned to more consciously embrace her role in the ancient and new tradition of healer-singers who have always helped hold the human social fabric together. Through music she attempts to fill a cultural void left by severed connections to her Polish\, Hungarian\, and Indigenous North American heritages and to thereby address the broader cultural voids felt by Americans today. She does this “with hopes of enticing the sacred work of grief back into our lives from the exile American society has placed it in”—and this is strongly evident in her 2019 release Grief in Exile\, as well as in her forthcoming EP Circle of Signs. \nThe songs continue to come to Mariee Siou\, and her approach as a singer continues to mature. The flowing melodies and quivering vibrato of her voice\, as well as the poetry itself\, continue to locate themselves and their work with a more solidly grounded precision as to just what that work is. Her most recent songs most deeply reflect this clarity of vision and acceptance of both her role as an artist and the endless need for that role in this changing world. Mariee Siou brings us back to the child and the grandmother in ourselves\, in a time in which it has never been more needed — and she intends to keep it up as long as she has a voice.

With a deep body of work spanning twelve albums\, and as a collaborator on records by Laraaji\, José Gonzalez\, Tunde Adebimpe (TV on the Radio)\, Scientist\, and more recently with André 3000 and Carlos Niño on New Blue Sun\, Mia is an essential element in the richly woven tapestry of underground music in her native Los Angeles. \n \nMorning Music is an instrumental\, ambient experience unlike anything else in her catalog. Originally released as a CD in 2009 and now available for the first time on vinyl\, Mia chose to forgo vocal expression and give full range to the voices of her instruments and the sounds around them. It is a gorgeous\, softly stirring work of art that makes full use of its minimal elements. Mia recorded and mixed the tracks at her own Château des Chats Studio in Frogtown\, Los Angeles\, playing harmonium\, piano\, tin whistle\, tamboura\, acoustic guitar\, and drums. On the tracks “Samai’i” and “Emotion\,” she is joined by multi-instrumentalist Andres Renteria on cajon\, piano\, wooden stool\, and udu. Birds and traffic\, heard softly in the distance\, feel like a natural and comforting part of the proceedings. The small dramas of the piano and tin whistle resolve peacefully\, like thoughts arising and falling in meditation. And although his parents were not particularly musical\, you could say he has musical genes. His great-great-great-great grandfather was a bassist for the Moscow Opera and his great-grandfather\, his namesake\, was a famous Russian violinist who became the concertmaster of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and gave lessons to his friend\, Albert Einstein.

Today\, surfing exists in a murky legal gray area and is viewed with suspicion by the Cuban authorities. \nDespite these challenges\, a group of passionate Cuban surfers is determined to carve out a place for surfing in the country’s culture of athletic excellence. Frank is the group’s de facto leader\, and many regard to be the best surfer on the island. Yaya is a community leader and surfer who is determined to ensure that the next generation can surf freely. When surfing is announced as an official sport for the Tokyo Olympics\, they see their chance to bring their sport out of the shadows and on to the world stage. What follows is a tale of underground surfers building their own boards from scratch\, dodging the authorities as they travel the island looking for the perfect wave\, and attempting to legitimize their passion by persuading the Cuban authorities to field an Olympic team. \nWhen Frank is invited to participate in a qualifier event out of the country\, he must decide whether to compete\, which would mean embarking on an illegal journey and risking permanent separation from his wife and newborn baby. Yaya is similarly torn when she is invited to participate in a surf symposium in Hawaii. Havana Libre is a story of people following their passion at great danger to themselves and ultimately begs the question: what would you risk to chase your dreams?

Manuel is considered to be a charismatic and passionate performer that over-delivers at every show. From a young age he had shown a talent for dance\, winning his first flamenco award at only 8 years old. He began to develop his unique style under the direction of Lita Peiro\, José Galván and later with Joaquin Grilo and Javier Latorre. \nBy age twenty\, Gutierrez began producing works and dancing across Europe with legendary artists including Duquende\, Chicuelo\, Juan Carmona and Chispa Negra. He also began to collaborate with top French choreographers Redha\, Marjorie Ascione\, and Gerome Zerbie. In 2008\, Manuel was invited to choreograph the production “Flamenco Flamen’ka” which sold out the Lyric Theatre in London and and ran for five years in Great Britain and France. Guiterrez’s fame as a choreographer and producer was growing. \nThe Telegraph in London called his work “Fiery.” \nDanse Magazine nicknamed him\, “The Young Flamenco Prince.” Figarro Newspaper raved “The dance is strong\, voluptuous\, and spectacular… a profound type of Flamenco and incredibly explosive.” \nANDRES VADIN \nAndres Vadin’s talent spans genres highlighting the flamenco guitar as a universal instrument with no boundaries. He graduated from the Guillermo Tomas and Almadeo Roldan Conservatory in Habana\, Cuba and his worldwide career has included collaborations on Latin Grammy-nominated albums. \n“EL NEGRO”Diego “El Negro” Alvarez\, is a master cajón player born in Venezuela. He lived 16 years in Spain where he developed his career alongside the most prestigious flamenco dance companies such as Joaquin Cortez\, Antonio Canales\, Sara Baras\, Nuevo Ballet Español and Paco Peña among others. With more than 12 nominations to the Latin Grammys\, winner of a Latin Grammy in 2010 for best Rock album of the year for “Sera” by La Vida Boheme. Promoting El Cajon as a universal instrument\, showing its main roots the Peruvian and the flamenco.  \n Coincidentally he studied Afro-venezuelan percussion in the popular culture workshops of the “Fundación Bigott”. \nHe is the founder of the Pasión Flamenca company and musical director and teacher at the school of superior flamenco studies in Caracas\, directed by Daniela Tugues. \n \nVanessa Albalos – (Dancer) was born in Ciudad Juarez\, Chihuahua\, Mexico\, which is where she spent her childhood. Her mother was the biggest influence in Flamenco\, as she introduced Vanessa to the art from an early age and gave her an upbringing rich in music. It was then that she started to become familiar with cante and the very complex and unusual rhythms of Flamenco. \nShe began to study Flamenco dance at the age of 13 in El Paso\, Texas with Rita Vega de Triana and Curro Niebla. After migrating to Southern California\, studied with several well-known teachers in the area\, including Sarah Parra\, Gabriela Garza\, Jose Tanaka (guitarist)\, Jesus Montoya (singer)\, Manuel Gutierrez\, and Briseyda Zarate. She frequently takes the opportunity to take workshops with artists from Spain. Vanessa has toured Mexico with the Festival Internacional Cervantino\, and Japan with Jose Tanaka’s Soniquete Flamenco\, also recording palmas for Jose’s guitar album “Lluvia”. She appeared in the Iron & Wine video on MTV’s “Boy With A Coin”\, and in Mater TV’s “Caminos Flamencos”\, with Yaelisa’s San Francisco-based company.
