SUMMARY:The Auspicious Return of The Illustrious Ancestors
DESCRIPTION:evening of interstellar cosmic stuff – fresh from the fingertips and hearts of this crew of soul searching Psychedelic Country/Eastern\n\n\nILLUSTRIOUS ANCESTORS return to the Corazon stage in Topanga Canyon. An Interstellar Country & Eastern music experience- fresh from the psychedelic fingertips and hearts of a crew of soul searching string/mind benders. Celebrating Willie Aron’s 60th Birthday\, We have limited beverages to share complimentary and BYOB IS ALLOWED (no hard alcohol). \n9PM (doors open 8:30pm) $20 bucks GTD Sit down Chair $15 bucks Standing\, limited pillow seating. \nThe Illustrious Ancestors features multi-instrumentalist/urban griot John Kruth (TriBeCastan\, Hal Willner) on voice\, ?ELECTRIC MANDOLIN?FLUTE ?ELECTRIC SITAR\, harmonica\, and?BULBAL TARANG (Indian keyed zither)\, \nwith Willie Aron (The Balancing Act\, Syd Straw\, Thee Holy Brothers) on? KEYBOARD\, ?GUITAR and VOICE\, \n⚡BASSIST⚡ Dave Soyars \n⚡PERCUSSION⚡ Devin Flynn \n⚡KEYBOARDS⚡ Carolyn Soyars \n⚡DRUMMER⚡Perry Ostrin \nBlending their own funky brand of Americana roots with interstellar “Country and Eastern” jams (that blend pedal steel guitar and sitar!) the Illustrious Ancestors freely skip from songs to Kruth’s spell-binding and often hilarious stories to funky\, prodigious instrumental improvisation. \nTHE ILLUSTRIOUS ANCESTORS \n“The Illustrious Ancestors bring back the sense of surprise\, mystery and adventure that is missing from so much music today. Good luck trying to corner them into a category—every time you think you’ve got them nailed\, they throw another curve and you’re back where you started from. Add to that the band’s superior musicianship and open-armed embrace of so many different facets of the musical universe\, and you know that the Illustrious Ancestors are truly onto something.” \n– Jeff Tamarkin\, contributor to Mojo\, JazzTimes\, Relix\, & more. \n“What they do is undefinable\, kissed by fearlessness\, charm and mystery. Add to that heartfelt love for musical expression and serious artistry\, along with Kruth’s comic verbal flair. The Illustrious Ancestors\, all gifted players mix up great real-time gumbos of Americana-flavored exotica\, burning brightly on electric mandolin\, electric sitar\, harmonica\, flute\, bulbul tarang (an Indian zither) with Willie Aron on keys …. Kruth has coined the music “Country & Eastern” so that should give you a fair approximation of their music. But better than trusting me\, go to one of their shows – or maybe all of their shows – Be prepared to feel giddy. “– Paul Zollo – Senior Editor – American Songwriter\, Author of Conversations with Tom Petty and Songwriters on Songwriting \n \n“The authentically strange is at a premium these days. Those portals of shamanic transcendence on a planet so plastered with flash and filigree are still there for the adventurous… ya just gotta poke around\, and if you’re lucky\, you will find yourself in the same room with the Illustrious Ancestors. What kind of music is this? With its groove and ooze and tonic and spirit\, the Illustrious Ancestors’ music shimmers and segues to and fro: psychedelic blues\, jazz (funky and free)\, banshee bluegrass\, poetry kooky and sublime\, Mississippi Metal\, folk fantabulous and fearsome\, sublime “Space” worthy of the Dead’s late ‘60s best\, if Pigpen were still alive and morphed into a surrealist poet\, rhythms global and local… blink your ears and you’ll miss a reference or knowing gesture. There’s real drama here\, the kind that gets you gazing into that eternal/internal mirror and ponder what’s going to happen next. There’s wise\, sly humor and genuine romance here too. The kind that will put a smile on your puss and keep it there till it hurts as your heart reminds what a great thing it is to be alive.” – Oliver Trager – Author of The American Book of the Dead: The Definitive Grateful Dead Encyclopedia; Keys to the Rain: The Definitive Bob Dylan Encyclopedia and Dig Infinity! The Life & Art of Lord Buckley \n \n“What happens when the Garage rock of ? Mark and the Mysterians goes on a Country bender and then hitches a ride with a refugee Beat Jazz band on the lam? You wind up with The Illustrious Ancestors’ shadowy echoes of the Doors and the Dead tripping in the backseat.” – Kevin Orton Soundblab \n \n“John Kruth is the high-octane raconteur of the Underground” – Legendary Beat composer/musician/author David Amram \nAs Chief Black Fox (Sitting Bull’s Great\, Great\, Grandson) said after the Illustrious Ancestors second show: “I hear a lot of music\, see a lot of bands\, most of them have no soul. But this band\, The Illustrious Ancestors has a very big soul.” \n“I feel like I’m having a psycho-active experience and I didn’t even eat any ‘shrooms!” – Young Fan \nGuest Ancestors at past shows have included Camper Van Beethoven’s Victor Krummenacher on guitar and voice\, and Jonathan Segel\, violin\, guitar and voice\, as well as Victoria Williams on vocals and Chinese harp – So you’ll never know who is going to show up to jam!

SUMMARY:Nights of Grief & Mystery DUO 2022 Tour Stephen Jenkinson & Gregory Hoskins
DESCRIPTION:Stephen Jenkinson & Gregory Hoskins fuse their separate work an evening that is part book & poetry reading\, part concert\n\n\nAuthor/Activist Stephen Jenkinson and recording artist Gregory Hoskins fuse their separate work into an evening that is part book reading\, part concert\, part poetry\, part lamentation\, part ribaldry\, part lifting the mortal veil and learning the mysteries there. What would you call such a thing? We called it Nights of Grief & Mystery. That’s what’s been performed to sold out houses in Australia\, New Zealand\, Canada\, England\, Scotland\, Wales\, Iceland and the USA. \nTHIS EVENT WILL SELL OUT ( you may also check Nights of Grief & Mystery Tour 2022 site to see if any tix avail there)\n \n \nConcerts for Turbulent Times they surely are. We aren’t poets\, maybe\, but the evenings are poetic. They are musical and grave and raucous and stilling\, which probably means they are theatrical. They are nights in which love letters to life are written and read aloud. There’s some boldness in them. They have that tone. These nights have the mark of our time upon them\, and they’re timely\, urgent\, alert\, steeped in mortal mystery. They’re quixotic. They have swagger. What would you call such a thing? We called it Nights of Grief & Mystery.\n \n \nSeven years\, 2 short films\, and three full length recordings after its’ inception\, Nights of Grief & Mystery: Rough Gods Tour travels the dark road again with a handful of not-to-be-missed duo shows that harken back to the beginning of their collaboration.\n \n \n“We do so when the current appetite is for either distraction or distress\, and we seem to be in neither business.” SJ\n \n \nWHAT THE AUDIENCE HAS SAID:\n \n“And for the whole show I just sat in wonder: How is it even possible to let music and words be engaged in such a fertile merging!? I felt that those deeply touching stories of Stephen Jenkinson were somehow brought to life by the music as if by midwifery and the wonderful voice of Gregory Hoskins and the feminine and sexy band. I know from my work as an author that it is very tricky to intertwine story-telling or reading with music. But this event proved the impossible. I looked around by the end of the evening and saw us all there in wonder and uplifted spirit\, yet deeply rooted in our inner archives.” Oddný Eir – Reykjavik\, Iceland\n \n \n“Wow. Just wow. What a beautiful\, heart wrenching\, funny\, brilliant show. I was astounded by the eloquence and poetic nature of Stephen’s oratory style\, and by the (for lack of a better word) TOTAL BAD-ASSNESS of the band.” N\, Tuners Falls\, ME\n \n \n“My heart is still full and my tongue is drunk from last night.” MS \, Franklin\, TN”So utterly heartbreaking and beautiful.” MLF\, Ithaca\, NY\n \n \n“Extraordinary! It was a beautiful and unraveling intimate night.” LG\, Roanoke\, NC\n \n \n“The show was beautiful and dark and compelling and cathartic. Educational yet humbling. Strange yet familiar. It was a singular experience. I’m still kinda dumbstruck by the whole thing.” CT\, Kitchener\, ON\n \n \n“I highly recommend this show to you. Highly. Higher than highly.” PS\, London\, ON

Inspired by root folk music from the Greenwich Village early sixties folk scene\, William Worden and Hallie Hostetter (Lady Appletree) combine forces to pass on the tradition of storytelling through song. \n9-9:45 “A bent version of 60’s pop…really fun.” — NPR \nTHE BLANK TAPES’ music sounds like a throwback to old-school psychedelia\, with some bluegrass and country influences thrown in. The songs have beachy chord progressions\, twangy guitar solos\, and solid verse-chorus-verse structures. Even the vocal hooks sound old. \n10-10:45 “After nearly two years in chrysalis\, I promise you a butterfly.”~ Sam Small \nSAM SMALL is a songwriter\, multi-instrumentalist\, and poet. Sam’s music is intimate\, intricate\, and lush in lyrical imagery with seemingly as much influence from music as poetry and literature. He lived in Seville and Lebrija\, Spain for 11 years and upon his return to the USA\, he began fusing roots Roma rhythms with Jazz and Blues. He has a long list of credits and collaborations including: director of Arte Y Pureza Flamenco Company\, producer of the Grammy featured “Say Their Names” production\, composer for Spanish Day with artwork by Bill Watterson\,performance and/or production credits with Macy Gray\, Judith Hill\, Herb Alpert\, Larry Grenadier\, Pedrito Mártinez\, Chano Domínguez\, Eric Harland\, Munyungo Jackson\, Miguel Funi\, Inés Bacán\, Rycardo Moreno\, Caramelo de Cuba\, and more. The other is an acoustic trio instrumental album with bassist\, Larry Grenadier and drummer\, Eric Harland. \nCihtli Ocampo – Described as a “…powerful dancer” by Dance magazine\, Cihtli Ocampo began her dance studies at the age of eight and moved to NYC at seventeen to study Dunham\, Horton\, jazz\, tap\, modern and ballet at the Ailey School and Steps On Broadway. In 1999\, she moved to Spain on a Fulbright Scholarship for the study of Flamenco and Spanish Dance. She spent the next eleven years immersed in Gitano (Spanish Roma) culture where she trained primarily with the legendary Farruco Family as well as Concha Vargas\, Manuela Carrasco\, Belen Maya\, Eva La Yerbabuena and Yolanda Heredia. She has performed and toured with many of the world’s most important flamenco artists including the Farruco family\, Ines Bacan\, Montse Cortes\, Miguel Funi\, Chano Dominguez\, & Manuel Molina. \nIn 2004 Ms. Ocampo was the featured female dancer in Tony Gatlif’s film Exils (Best Director\, Cannes Film Festival 2004). Ms. Ocampo now lives in Los Angeles where she continues her life-long commitment to cross-cultural understanding through the arts. In addition to performing\, Ms. Ocampo works as a guest choreographer\, teacher & movement coach for UCSB\, Cal Arts\, UCSD\, Pomona College\, Santa Monica College & independent studios and productions worldwide. She has choreographed over 30 original works for stage and film and taught thousands of students; teaching flamenco rooted in an understanding of its rhythm\, song\, improvisation and history. \nJuan Peña Bacán- born in Lebrija\, Spain in 1960 is the son of Bastián Bacán and Ana la del Pelao\, brother of singer Inés Bacán and guitarist Pedro Bacán\, great-grandson of Pinini\, nephew of Fernanda and Bernarda de Utrera\, and first cousin of El Lebrijano\, El Funi and El Turronero. It is precisely within this legendary family of Gypsy singers that Juan learned his particularly intimate form of cante gitano hablado (spoken Gypsy song). His singing is characterized by precise rhythmic nuances along with a deep knowledge of the roots of the main Gypsy cantes\, the solea\, the siguiriyas and the bulerias. Juan’s voice\, much like the older flamenco giants Juan Talega and Tio Borrico\, has a deep\, rich quality and rebels against the modern tendency in flamenco to yell or scream out verse. His voice is like an aged wine that becomes increasingly more satisfying with every drop. Juan Bacán’s discography includes: Que Nos Queda (Sevilla Ediciones) and Soleángeles. \nRaúl Pineda – Grammy award-winner and 3-time Grammy-nominated\, RAUL PINEDA\, has been named one of today’s best and most innovative Latin drummers in the world. Raul’s unique style of playing — a result of a coveted blend of Afro Cuban and contemporary influences applied to the modern drum set — have catapulted him into being one of Cuba’s most influential drummers of his generation. Born and raised in Havana\, Cuba\, Raul’s musical foundation was cultivated by his challenging socio-economic surroundings. As a young boy\, Raul created makeshift drum kits by staking discarded steel rods into the ground and attaching old tin cans that had been used to store cooking oil. His first drumsticks were made from branches of a nearby orange tree. Pineda’s credits include: Chucho Valdés\, Michel Camilo\, and Giovanni Hidalgo amongst many others. \nRic Fierabracci is an American bassist who has toured and/or recorded with such artists as Frank Gambale\, Chick Corea\, Sir Tom Jones\, Dave Weckl\, Billy Cobham\, Bradley Joseph\, Shakira\, Nancy Sinatra\, Planet X\, The 5th Dimension\, The Beach Boys\, and Yanni. He is featured on Yanni’s live concert videos and albums Live at the Acropolis\, Live at Royal Albert Hall\, and Tribute\, most recently touring during the 2003 Ethnicity world tour. He also appears in Shakira’s music video “Inevitable” Fierabracci had performed as the house bassist at the L.A. jazz club “The Baked Potato” until he relocated to New York City\, and has also contributed to numerous TV and film jingles.
